Ray was
the Youngest player ever in the band. I had to approach his guardians
to ask permission to take him out of town on tour. He was only
17 years old at the time. I took him across the country and he
went all the way crazy, but man could he play the drums like John
Bonham. A bit accident prone, his nickname for a while 'walking
disaster', but eventually a new nickname seemed to catch on...'absconding
man', because he used to just disappear...mostly whenever it was
time to move equipment in or out of a gig.
We had some good times, lots of laughs and many great shows. I was really fond of him, but unfortunately the temptations of excess were too much for Ray...he left the band in a lurch on more than one occasion...eventually he played with Robbie Kreiger (guitarist for The Doors) and then a punk band called Automatic Seven...relations were strained...I don't know what he is up to now.
